Richard Ross

Richard Ross was born and raised in New York. His most recent book, entitled Architecture of Authority, was named one of the best books of 2007 by PDN magazine. He received his BA from University of Vermont and his MFA from University of Florida. He has been teaching at UCSB since 1977. Ross has an extensive exhibition record in the United States and Europe. He has photographed for the New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Discover, Time, Newsweek, Vogue, San Francisco Examiner, Frankfurter Allgemaine, and other noteworthy publications. Ross was the principal photographer for the J. Paul Getty Museum during their Villa restoration project, and is currently the principal photographer for the Getty Conservation Institute. With this title, he is documenting the research work of the GCI in El Salvador, Honduras, Tunisia, and China. His most recent exhibition at ACME in Los Angeles was named one of the 10 best exhibitions of 2007 by Tom Vanderbuilt in ARTFORUM.  The Architecture of Authority photographs will be shown in New York at the Aperture Gallery. The show opens May 21, 2008. He will also be showing a new body of work at the Nathan Larramendy Gallery in Ojai, California in June of 2008. Ross is the recent recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and has been the recipient of NEA and Fulbright Fellowships in previous years.
