You may have recently opened a small box to access its contents: a bar of soap, a package of chewing gum, or a deck of cards. You may have then deposited that box in the trash, or added it to the recycling bin. I take a different approach: I claim these boxes, each designed to hold a particular product, as tools to make my art.
"It is the empty space inside the bowl that makes the bowl useful," states the Tao Te Ching. Like the ancient Chinese text, I see utility in emptiness. Through drawing and painting, I explore empty space through the unconstructed box. In its undone state, a box has no material function. With the interaction of the human hand, however, it can become a repository for anything. It is blueprint for thing and thing itself. It is pure potential.
